How reflecting on your past can help you move forward

Reflect: How reflecting on your past can help you move forward

We’re now halfway through 2017 so it’s a great time to take a step back and reflect on how the year has gone so far. If you’re like me, you probably feel like time has been flying by and can’t believe we’re already in July!

Of course, any time is a great time to stop, reflect & review so that you can make course corrections going forward. But most of us don’t think to do this. So consider this your reminder.  *wink*

I also want to note that we don’t have to spend a lot of time diving into the past for it to be effective. Overall, I prefer to stay in the present with my sight set on my intentions. But it can be helpful to look over our shoulder from time to time, to see if there are any patterns emerging that can be helpful in moving forward, to check in with our goals and intentions and to celebrate our progress & successes!

I’ve put together a series of questions to help you do just this! So find a quiet moment, grab a cup of tea and a notebook and dive in!

Reflection Journal Prompts {Looking back}

  1. When I reflect on the past 6 months, what’s my overall feeling or impression? What are 2-3 words to describe my experience? How do these words make me feel?
  2. Are my goals & intentions the same as they were in January?Are there any that need to be adjusted?
  3. What issues or challenges have come up again and again over the past 6 months? What can I learn from this? What can I do differently going forward? What am I ready to let go of?
  4. What was my favorite memory or experience from the past 6 months? What felt light & fun? What brought me joy?
  5. What am I most proud of from the past 6 months?

Take some time to reflect on the good, the bad and everything in between! Keep in mind that it’s the challenging experiences that show us what we don’t want so that we can move towards what we do want. This exercise will help you to take note of those experiences so that you can move towards more of what feels good!

Once you’ve had a chance to take a stroll through the past 6 months, you can use that information to look ahead to the next 6 months. This is where we take the valuable information from our review and make it useful and real going forward.

It’s the perfect time to make any adjustments and really consider what you want to do, see, feel & experience in the last half of the year.

Reflection Journal Prompts {Looking forward}

  1. What do I want to experience in the next 6 months? What do I want to do differently? Do I have any new goals or intentions?
  2. What are 2-3 words that describe the overall feeling of what I want to experience in the next 6 months?
  3. What new choices & actions do I want to take that match my new goals, intentions & desired feelings?
  4. Who I am ready to become in order to experience what I desire?

Now that you’re clear on what you want for the remaining half of the year, it’s time to bring those desires into your life through action. Make a list of actions you want to take and put them into your calendar! For ongoing actions, put a reminder on your weekly calendar or in your phone.

You might want to take some time to decide how you’re actually going to integrate these new actions into your life. A visualization exercise can be really helpful in helping you “see” how your new actions can blend into your daily life.

It can also be helpful to share your goals and intentions with a friend who can support and motivate you as you begin to make changes! If you don’t have a trusted friend to help you with this, coaching is a great option too!

As always, I would love to hear about your insights going through this exercise. Feel free to share in the comments below!
