When to stop working on your mindset. And what to do instead.


I love mindset tools — working with beliefs, blocks, affirmations, visualization, meditation — all of it is so helpful in figuring out what you want and what might be holding you back. I use these tools myself and I highly recommend that you give them a try too!

I also believe that mindset tools should come with a warning:

Mindset tools are addictive. Know your limits!

Ok, I’m mostly joking there. But what I mean is that sometimes we can end up getting stuck in an endless cycle of mindset work without ever moving forward.

We hope that by writing enough affirmations, or meditating every day, or working on our mindset, we can shift our beliefs enough that change will feel easy. We hope that we will be able to just shift ourselves to the point where new actions will just come naturally to us. Where we become the person who lives the life we desire.

The idea that changing your life starts in your mind is shared often in the personal development world. And it’s 100% true.

But here’s the catch: Changing your life may start in your mind, but it doesn’t end in your mind.

Until we actually take action, it’s all just a vision. In order to start living the life we desire, we have to step into our vision and step out of our heads.

Transformation requires doing something different from what we’ve always done. It requires taking NEW action.

No matter how much you’ve prepared yourself, doing something new and different can be scary.

Change is uncomfortable. There’s no way around it.

Rather than pretend that by doing enough mindset work, you’ll be able to easily change your life, let’s just be honest about how change feels…

You will feel uncomfortable. You will second guess everything. You will wonder if it’s worth it.

You will feel like everyone is watching you and waiting for you to fail. You will feel awkward answering people’s questions and you will want to dodge everyone’s advice.

You will want to withdraw into your old way of doing things, even though you know it’s not working for you. You will be tempted to procrastinate, stall or self-sabotage.

I’m not sharing all of this to make mindset tools seem worthless (they aren’t!) or to make change feel impossible (it’s not!). I’m sharing all of this so that you are prepared for what’s ahead. I want you to recognize what’s happening so that you can still move forward despite how scary, awkward and uncomfortable it might feel.

So how do we deal with the reality of change and still move forward?

Here are 3 important ideas about change that I want you to remember:

  1. You are experiencing normal human behavior. There is nothing wrong with feeling fear or feeling uncomfortable. Uncomfortable does not equal wrong. If you’ve done the work to figure out what you want, trust that you are on the right path.
  2. People are watching less than you think. Sure, people are curious and may ask you questions when they see you. But then they get on with their own lives and forget all about you.
  3. The uncomfortable feelings will pass. Eventually your new behavior will become your new normal. Your comfort zone will shift. Stick with it, knowing that it will get easier.

Most importantly, I want you to know that you can do this. You can take the reins in your own life and move towards your vision. You can create what you truly desire, one step at a time.

You have so much more strength and power in your own life than you realize! You just need to trust yourself and believe that your dreams are worth pursuing. And that I believe 100%.
